Today is 1st May, which means that spring is well and truly underway and summer is just around the corner. For those of us who take pride in our attire this brings many advantages clothes-wise: fewer annoying layers; more peep toe heels; the chance to wear all those functionally useless jackets that don't actually keep you warm. But for those members of the population unfortunate enough not to understand the ins and outs of sartorial success, summer dressing can be a minefield. Cue acres of pasty flesh, yards and yards of garishly bright colours and florals, florals, florals. I wrote only the other week about the pitfalls of said print, and at the moment everywhere I look it seems unsuspecting folk have fallen into this trap. So today I implore you to ignore those shop displays that scream summer, tempting you into unflattering yellows, loud shouty stripes and mumsy flowers. To those of you who like to look fashionable even when the sun is blazing, I say: black is still the new black. Yes, yes, I know, colour is terribly in right now. But ultimately there is nothing more chic than black. I don't usually advocate wearing it head-to-toe, as I like a flash of subtle colour here and there. But Julia Restoin-Roitfeld has reminded me, by way of her latest stunningly simple black ensemble, that you can't beat fashion's favourite colour, even in summertime. All you need to remember is to keep legs bare, textures interesting and make-up natural; accessorise with a simple friendship bracelet and wear your hair loose and unstyled. So take inspiration from this elegant French clothes horse and dare to wear black - and leather - in the heat. You may not look "summery", per se, but I for one would choose beautiful over beach-ready any day of the week.
