Alexa Chung always used to be one of my favourite style icons. Especially in the days of her MTV show, she had the perfect knack of dressing up basics and adding her own unique spin to casual ensembles. Messy dip-dyed hair, battered tan satchels and miles of leg provided the perfect finishing touches to tomboyish looks. Lately, however, her style seems to have lost a little of its sparkle. Perhaps it's just that fashion has moved on a little and she, well, hasn't really. Satchels and geek chic were all very well back in 2009, but nowadays her trademark look can sometimes seem a little dated. However, I'm nothing if not loyal, and will always continue to respect Miss Chung as that rare breed of celebrity who really does know what she's doing style-wise. And it would be unfair to dismiss her, because occasionally she still pulls it out of the bag.

Take the ensemble she wore to the Carven spring '11 launch (if you haven't heard of this French label, it's definitely worth a Google): black shorts, white shirt and white blazer teamed with a turquoise clutch. What I love about this look is that it perfectly demonstrates Alexa's signature knack of adding just enough femininity to mannish tailoring. Admittedly in the past she has sometimes gone too far down the boyish route (sometimes I do wish she'd wear something just a little bit sexy) but here she strikes the perfect balance. Love the white blazer teamed with black shorts (white shorts would have been far too matchy-matchy); love the peep of black on the shirt collar. Not hugely in love with the shoes, but that powder blue clutch is the saving grace. A perfect pop of fresh springtime colour. Above I've picked out some suitable high-street alternatives so that you can create this smart/casual look for yourself, which would be perfect for dinner and drinks. Anyway, I'm rather pleased that Alexa looks to be back on form, and can't wait to see which shows she turns up to this fashion week. I'll keep you posted.
