today i'm channelling... emmanuelle alt

Following the recent news that Emmanuelle Alt is to succeed the inimitable Carine Roitfeld as editor-in-chief of French Vogue, I thought it was high time I took a closer look at her style, since undoubtedly all eyes will be on her come the fashion weeks. And what do you know, she's really rather good at getting dressed. Emmanuelle's style is not all that different from Carine's; they both adhere to the age-old French mantra of sky high heels + sharp tailoring + bedhead hair. But Emmanuelle's look tends to be a little more classic than that of her former boss, tending to eschew minidresses in favour of slouchy jeans and a basic tee. She always revs up her understated outfits, however, with stellar shoes, impeccable jackets and a good dose of leather for added sex appeal. Certainly her approach to fashion is one we could all learn a few vital lessons from.

So here are four of my favourite Emmanuelle outfits for your viewing pleasure. If you're interesting in channelling her Gallic charm, you may be disheartened (though probably not surprised) to learn that this is a lady who favours a high-end designer or three. Luckily though, I've managed to track down some stellar high street substitutes, so that we can all learn from this fashionable femme regardless of our budgets.

So, lesson number one: team casual, worn-in jeans with basic tees for a nonchalant downtime look.
Dr Denim's motorcycle jeans, £50 at Asos, are the perfect washed grey colour, and the biker detailing and ankle zips elevate them above your average boring jean. Alternatively, Topshop's Moto vintage wash Baxter skinny jeans, £40, are a great blue option. Team these with either a classic Breton tee like New Look's long sleeved striped top, £8.99, or a sludgy grey top such as Oasis' boat neck long sleeve t-shirt, £16.

Lesson number two: the perfect jacket will make your whole look. Emmanuelle especially favours a classic navy military jacket with gold buttons (and I am definitely with her there), but if you can't afford Burberry, then why not try
Joseph's Yves admiral jacket, £225 (reduced from £450) at My-wardrobe.com. I would recommend spending as much as you can afford on such a classic jacket, because the better the tailoring the better you will look, but if you can't stretch to the Joseph version, then River Island's navy military coat, £74.99, is a great alternative. If you're not in the military mood, then New Look's furry waterfall coat is a dead ringer for one Emmanuelle owns, and reduced to just £12. However, this is out of stock online, so you could try Dorothy Perkins' black fur and buckle coat, £50 (reduced from £85), instead. Or alternatively copy Emmanuelle's feline fur coat in the far right picture with Topshop's tall leopard vintage fur coat, £98.

And finally lesson three: the devil is in the details. A fierce pair of shoes, a well-chosen scarf or a classic pair of sunglasses will ensure your basics are far from boring. So for the shoes, either go for a more polished look with a classic pair of black suede shoe boots, such as
Dorothy Perkins' black zip shoe boots, £45, or slip on some slouchy pirate-style mid-calfs; Asos' Kelly tie leg knee high boots, £75, can be rolled down to imitate Emmanuelle's favourite Isabel Marant footwear. Finally, finish off your outfit with a pair of timeless aviator sunglasses, like Topshop's gold stripe bar aviator sunglasses, £12, or a classic black belt, such as Asos' leather waist basic belt, £15. And there you have it: French editrix style on a shoestring. Parfait! And may I just take this opportunity to wish Emmanuelle bonne chance in her new role. Here's hoping she can live up to Carine's formidable legacy...
